Symptomatic Celiac

Recently diagnosed with celiac and heading to Maui in a couple months for Anniversary. Any suggestions on navigating restaurants and food options while there? We will have a condo also and I’m set on breakfast at the condo to reduce risk. Thanks friends!

gfali19945 We found it very easy. Avoid the poke’. It’s typically marinated in soy sauce. The FMGF app was very helpful for us on Kauai and the big island. 1 reply

erika_19 I went to Ferraro’s Restaurant at the Four Seasons for lunch this past November. I absolutely loved the food. Let the waiter know you’re strictly GF and cannot have any form of cross contamination. 1 reply

lin49236 Maui is amazing about this - most restaurants and hotels we visited had several gluten free options - and most of the dinner and breakfast spots will make accommodation. 3 replies

violet6543 Always ask the restaurant staff if they need to make a kitchen note, etc, NO MATTER WHAT. Rule for always. 1 reply

k_berlin You’ll have so many options! And you can get GF poke at coconuts, GF donuts at Maui Ono (order a day ahead) GF flatbreads at Maui Flatbread. And Mana Foods can’t be beat for specialty groceries.

juliepscott Avoid everything with soy of course. We went to the grocery store upon arrival and cooked mostly ourselves but going out I would let them know that I get very sick from gluten and ask what they do to manage gluten.

kathryn97529 In I’m Maui right now and finding several options. Depending on where you’re staying, if you have a kitchen, you can also stuck up at the Costco by the airport, and fill your fridge with some staples just in case!

judmaui18 Any restaurant in the Four Seasons, if eating sushi, Isana has a gluten free menu and gluten free fish tempura and vegetable tempura, Fabiani has a wonderful Italian selection. Pizza, pasta and desserts. If you eat sushi or sashimi you can purchase organic gluten free soy sauce, tamari in packets for travel. I always travel with the little things that make a huge difference. Have fun!

jamie701 Loads of options! Top shelf experience restaurants we enjoyed were Merriman’s and Mama’s Fish House.
